Nokia suing Apple for iPhone patent infringement

Nokia's put the slap-down on Apple by filing a lawsuit against the Steve Jobs-helmed company, for infringing on ten patented technologies including the use of GSM, UMTS and wireless LAN.

Apple is "trying to get a free ride on the back of Nokia's innovation", the Finnish company is claiming. Nokia's made agreements with over 40 companies, enabling the usage of the wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption technologies they pioneered (and spent over 40bn Euros in their R&D department on), however it appears all of Apple's iPhone handsets to date have breached their patents.

Apple is yet to respond to the lawsuit, but that hasn't stopped Nokia's VP of Legal and Intellectual Property, Ilkka Rahnasto, from commenting "The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for - Apple is also expected to follow this principle."
