Some Key Differences Between Desktops And Laptops

There are a lot of things to consider when you go shopping for a new computer. Should you get a laptop or a desktop? The fact is that for the same price youll get a lot more out of a desktop than you will a laptop. If you need portability though, a laptop is the best option. Lets take a look at a few things that make desktops a better investment overall.

Price Differences

I think its pretty much common knowledge at this point that laptops cost more than desktops. But have you ever wondered why? Well, there are a number of reasons but one of the big ones is that they cost more to manufacture. When a desktop is put together they dont have to worry as much about space and cooling issues. Building a laptop takes more precision, and this increases the cost.

Usability and Ergonomic Considerations

Have you ever had your hands cramp on you from typing on a laptop for too long? I have, and its not a fun thing. But with a desktop you can get an ergonomic keyboard and other things that improve your computer using experience. Laptops have a lot of constraints in this way. Sure, you can still get an external device, but it just gives you one more thing you have to carry around with you laptop.

Desk Space

Laptops are meant to be compact. But when you think about it, if you have a desktop the only things that really sit on your desktop are the monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Most of us put the actual tower underneath the desk. So in the end a laptop and desktop take up the same amount of desk space.

Resolution Problems

You can increase the resolution of your laptop monitor if you want to, but you may run into a few problems. Very quickly the text become too small to see. And really the only way to get a bigger monitor for a laptop is to either buy a new laptop or get an external one. A typical monitor for a desktop is 19, whereas most laptops are around 14 17. This is a huge difference!
