Installing ESX 4 Without Disconnecting Shared Storage

Best practice definitely dictates that one should detach an ESX host from any SAN LUN’s before installing ESX. This is to prevent overwriting shared VMFS volumes and therefore wiping out your virtual machine environment.

However, while this step is necessary it can sometimes be a big inconvenience or outright impossible in certain circumstances such as a remote install or due to facility access/change control requirements. To address this need, Dinny Davies posted a great solution on the VIOPS site which provides all the steps as well as the script necessary to prevent the HBA drivers, be it Emulex or QLogic, from loading during boot up from the ESX install media.
